The unrest and violence that characterized the Arab Spring may have started here, but Tunisia is also among the very first of these nations to right itself and move forward, as a democracy. (Don’t be put off by its daunting situation on the world map, squeezed between Algeria and Libya; its 350-odd miles from the Mediterranean sea down to the Sahel are all relatively safe.)

There’s a lot to love here: Tunis, the capital, has a stunning old medina, many of its palaces and dars converted to museums. The coastal villages are some of the prettiest in North Africa: Sidi Bou Said, not far outside the capital, can be inundated with Euro-vacationers, but its blue-and-white facades punctuated by spills of bright-pink bougainvillea are so camera-ready that you won’t mind the crowds.

Stay at Dar Said, in operation since 1948. South and inland is the famous oasis of Ksar Ghilane, surrounded by Berber villages and the saffron dunes of the Sahara; make like TE Lawrence and bivouac overnight, at one of the tented camps in the area.
